Tips for choosing a coffee grinder

Coffee lovers know that freshly ground coffee has the strongest aroma and sharpest taste. Unfortunately, drinking coffee from a pack is only good for the first time. Later, the aroma disappears and the taste changes. What to do to enjoy a fragrant coffee in the mornings? Everything is quite simple - you buy coffee beans, grinding them every time before making coffee, and you get the best quality coffee you can make at home.

Let's start with grinding. This will require a proper coffee grinder. But how do you choose the right one? We'll give you some tips.

3 types of coffee grinders - manual, electric mill and electric grinder

Manual coffee grinders are now a rarity. It's almost an antique device for grinding coffee beans by hand. It is simple - small patches are turned by turning the knob like a hand mincer. Coffee beans are cool, so here's the effort. But basically grinds pretty well. Not all appliances can adjust the volume of coffee, so this machine has gone into oblivion.

Electric coffee grinders are a revival device. During the Soviet era, they were popular enough, but later, a large variety of ground coffee types appeared and people stopped grinding themselves. No need. The coffee beans were ground by our parents, because they already knew that freshly ground coffee is the most delicious. The operating principle of an electric coffee grinder is similar to that of an eraser: a motor and a quadruple blade. The blade rotates very quickly and shreds the solid beans into pieces. If smaller pieces are desired, the running grinder needs to be kept longer.

Mill coffee grinders are the real virtues of coffee grinding. They work on the principle of pins - one of the pins with teeth is stable, while the other pivots. The bean caught between them is instantly pulverized. Not lumps, but powder. After all, since ancient times, wheat flour was only milled with mills, not with rotating knives ... Such coffee is of the highest quality and suitable for espresso making.

Prices - dramatically different

The quality of coffee is very important, but before you buy a coffee grinder, you should set a price level that is acceptable to you. The point is that prices vary dramatically. Electric coffee mills (grinders) cost 20 euros. Ground coffee machines start at € 100. That's five times as much. This makes the price level very important here.

The grandeur of ground coffee

One of the key aspects of coffee flavor is the coarseness of the coffee. When ground to a powder, the coffee is very aromatic and has a characteristic flavor. If the coffee is ground quite coarse, some of the flavor remains in the sediment.
Grind coffee grinders have a very good function - they can regulate the coarseness of the coffee. Some models have up to 40 roughness modes. 20. Electric mills can basically grind coffee beans to flour too, but as you grind longer, thin metal knives become hot and ground coffee begins to heat up in the coffee grinder. This results in a taste loss and unpleasant aftertaste. If the engine is powerful and the grinding rate is small, this can usually be avoided. Turning the handle to the powder will take a looooooooong time to turn the handle. This is simply ineffective in the 21st century.

Dosing of ground coffee

When only one or two people drink coffee at home and do so together, a special serving of ground coffee is not very necessary. Just add as many beans as you need for 1-2 cups of coffee and grind. Then you immediately pour it into the scoop of the coffee machine or immediately into the cup to fill it with hot water. With a larger family and more people enjoying coffee, it is worth looking for models that have ground coffee containers. Of course, storing ground coffee for a long time will risk losing some of its aroma and taste. The beans also have a special translucent bowl so you can always see how many there are and how many more to add.

Power is important

Coffee grinders are not very powerful appliances and use very little electricity. A simple, inexpensive electric grinder has a 100 Watt motor. It would take 10 hours to torture it to use 1 kW / h. Some consume so much a year. But the point is not to save. The more powerful the engine, the faster it grinds the coffee beans. 400-500 Watt coffee grinders are very fast and grind in a matter of seconds. If the coffee grinder is not powerful enough and you want to make fine coarse coffee, it will take more than a dozen seconds to grind. During this time, the blades will heat up. They won't do anything from heating up, but you will need to wait 10-20 minutes for the engine and blades to cool down before you can have coffee again. More powerful engines do not heat up so quickly. Therefore, choose more powerful devices.

Metal or ceramic mills?

If you are choosing ground coffee, pay attention to the materials of the ground. They are mostly steel, but there are also ceramic ones. Ceramic mills hold heat longer than metal, although they heat up much more slowly. If your coffee machine is working very intensively, opt for metal peas, as the ceramic peas will not cool down after the first cups and the coffee will be less fragrant. In terms of durability, both patches are almost eternal. Only the motors that rotate them are timeless.

Design and appearance

Some coffee grinders do not have many features, but they are insanely expensive. There are even more than € 300 coffee shops. Why? The reasons are two - materials and design. Classic design coffee makers produced by companies with 100 years of experience will automatically be more expensive than the products of popular home appliances manufacturers. The next moment is the materials. Coffee grounds are mostly plastic. This ensures that they are affordable to the average user. When the entire body of the coffee grinder is made of stainless steel instead of plastic, the price increases accordingly. This must be taken into account.

Electronics

Although it seems that these devices no longer require the use of electronic batteries, some manufacturers are able to add them. Mostly these are timers with LED displays, as well as programmable modes. These are surplus features that will obviously have to pay a higher price.

Delicious coffee!
