How to choose a sink?

Before installing a kitchen, you should think very seriously about which sink you will choose. Other kitchen installation works also depend on it. Sinks really aren’t of one type, so sometimes choosing the right one is quite tricky. Here are some tips.

Sink installation method

Before purchasing a sink, pay attention to how the sink is installed. There are 4:

  1. Top. The sink is mounted on top of the countertop by simply inserting it into the hole cut in the countertop.
  2. Slimtop or thin top. The sink is mounted on a table top, but its upper edge is very thin - about 1 mm thick.
  3. Level with the table top. The sink does not have a top edge, so it is recessed flush with the table top. This is a rather complicated installation method. Not very suitable for wooden countertops.
  4. Mounted from below. The sink is mounted from below, its edge is below the level of the worktop. Not suitable for wooden countertops, only granite or artificial stone.

The most popular methods are surface or Slimtop, as they do not require additional construction and the services of a skilled craftsman.

Sink shape and capacity

When choosing a sink, it is quite important to choose the right shape. There are several:

  1. Round.
  2. Oval.
  3. Square.
  4. Rectangular shapes
  5. Trapezoidal shapes (for corners).

It depends on the shape how you will need to cut the worktop and attach the sink. Rectangular sinks are the most popular because they are spacious enough and usually have extra capacity. Also quite common square, a little rarer - round or oval. They are smaller but easier to maintain. Angular or trapezoidal sinks are quite rare, their choice is small. They are characterized by an abundance of their capacities. The corner sink can have up to four containers - the main, additional, as well as drying and dish drying capacity.

Sink materials

One of the most important criteria for choosing a sink is the sink materials. According to them, the types of sinks are determined. Materiality also determines the price of the sink.

Ceramic sinks

These are some of the most expensive sinks that stand out for their quality and durability. If a manufacturer advertises their ceramic sinks as eternal, it’s worth believing because it’s actually a very advanced technology and material. Sinks are made of the highest quality ceramics, therefore they are resistant to scratches, they are not affected by food and chemicals. They are heavy and massive as well as quite expensive. Admittedly, they look very luxurious and fit into exclusive kitchens.

Granite sinks

Granite powder mixed with acrylic makes one of the most popular granite sinks. They look quite luxurious, although it is not completely real granite.Nevertheless, they retain the properties of the stone - are resistant to shocks, knife cutting, well cleaned and maintained, do not affect household chemicals.Although prices are quite high, but people often buy them when they want have a sink that does not require maintenance and replacement for 10-20 years.

Stainless steel sinks

Stainless steel is a light alloy of steel, chromium and nickel. It is lightweight and resistant to water and household chemicals, as long as it is of good quality. Unfortunately, you won’t set the quality in sight. At least a magnet needs to be added. If the stainless steel is of good quality, it should not attract the magnet or pull very weakly because it is low in iron. If the magnet sticks well, it means the sink is more metallic than stainless steel. After a while, it will start to rust.
Another important point is the pressed sinks. They are stamped from a single sheet, so there are no welds. Welded sinks are more massive because a thicker sheet of steel is used. Steel sinks are an economical option, but the quality is sometimes disappointing.

Tectonite sinks

Tectonite is a plastic-coated plastic fiber. It is very strong and smooth with a matte finish. In terms of properties, tectonite is not very inferior to granite sinks, but is much lighter and about 40 percent. cheaper. This is an economical option for those who want higher quality. Tectonite was developed and manufactured by the Swiss company Franke, which is very well known in Lithuania as a manufacturer of quality sinks. Other companies do not have similar materials because they are patented and owned by Franke.
